Kakehashi Supervisors are JACL representatives who are expected to work in tandem with JICE staff to facilitate the Kakehashi trip. Supervisors will be responsible for chaperoning up to 25 participants throughout the entire trip, including travel days.
Supervisors will be expected to support participants and assist JICE staff through the following:
Help participants through airport customs & immigration
Communicate requests and itinerary updates from JICE
Take attendance and facilitate morning temperature checks
Ensure timeliness and engagement of participants
Support participants with remarks and action plans
Debrief and facilitate check-ins throughout the program
In addition, supervisors must be comfortable facilitating conversations with participants about their experiences and Japanese American identity. Supervisors should be able to hold space for reflection during bus time, meals, and/or at the end of each day. As JACL representatives, supervisors should also be able to explain the purpose of the trip as well as how participants can continue to stay involved with JACL and the greater Japanese American community.
Requirements for supervisors:
Must be at least 28 years of age.
Is a current JACL member
Prepared to engage fully with the physical requirements of the program
Prepared to handle emergency situations
Is comfortable with interacting with JICE Staff / MOFA Officials
Able to facilitate conversations about identity with participants
An attendance fee of $250
Must have the most recent COVID-19 booster vaccine before leaving for Japan
