Welcome Reception - Wednesday, July 19 - 7:00pm-9:00pm

USC Kazan Taiko

Kazan Taiko was founded in 2002 as the first Japanese taiko ensemble group at USC. Our goal is to provide a place for our members to express themselves through rhythm and movement, while learning and participating in the tradition of Japanese taiko drumming. We perform at events hosted by fellow Trojans, as well as events in the greater Los Angeles area, in an effort to share the tradition of taiko with our campus and local communities.

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi

California Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi represents the 66th Assembly District, located in the South Bay and Harbor Area of Los Angeles County.  He is a former prosecutor and Deputy Attorney General with the California Department of Justice and a former Torrance School Board member.

Al is fighting for jobs, affordable health care, good schools, safe neighborhoods, and a healthy environment.  He is the Chair of the Education Committee and the Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Aerospace.  Al and his wife Hiroko are raising their family in the South Bay, where he has lived for over 25 years.

Eden Kai

With millions of fans around the world, Eden Kai has earned his reputation as being a ukulele and guitar virtuoso, a Pop/R&B vocalist, and an accomplished actor. While many were first introduced to Eden when he joined the cast of Netflix and Fuji Television’s Terrace House: Aloha State, the young star’s success had already been years in the making. He has since gone on to make additional appearances on Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020, appeared on Shiro to Kiiro on Amazon Prime and has performed at the Fuji Rock Festival, Nisei Week Festival in Little Tokyo, OC Japan Fair and ANA Honolulu Music Week in Waikiki. Eden’s accomplishments have earned him interviews by NBC News and The Yomiuri Shinbun.

Derek Mio -Emcee

Derek Mio is an actor and stand up comedian who starred in the second season of AMC's 'The Terror: Infamy' which can be viewed on Hulu and Amazon Prime.  He has also appeared in several television shows including GREEK, Grey's Anatomy, Hawaii Five-0, as well as Netflix's Medal of Honor in which he portrayed recipient Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura.  You may have also seen Derek in commercials for Audi, ServiceNow, Geico, and more.  He has performed at The Comedy Store, Laugh Factory, Improv and other venues.  He also produced and hosted the first ever BudoComedy Show at the Terasaki Budokan.

Staci Toji

Toji Law was founded in 2018 by Staci Toji, an Estate Planning attorney in Torrance, CA dedicated to helping families of all generations plan for their future. Within the community, Staci serves on the Board of Directors for the Go For Broke National Education Center and is actively involved with the U.S.-Japan Council. When she's not at the office, Staci enjoys going to Mammoth with her husband and their two German Shepherds. She is also an avid hula dancer with Hālau Keali‘i O Nālani and has competed and performed all around the world for 25+ years.

Mayor Karen Bass

Karen Bass is the first woman and second African American to be elected as Los Angeles mayor. She began her term focused on providing housing for homeless people. Bass earned her master’s degree in social work from USC. In the state Assembly, Bass became the nation’s first African American woman to lead a state legislative body. In Congress, Bass was awarded the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, helped protect small businesses during the pandemic, created policy to provide local jobs with federal infrastructure funding and led passage of what was called “the most significant child welfare policy reform in decades.”
