Art of Gaman Visits Houston
Houston, TX – The Art of Gaman exhibit continues its nationwide tour and will be on display at the Houston Holocaust Museum from January 29th to September 20th, 2015. AARP and JACL members who show their membership cards will receive $4 off general admission tickets.
Viewed by nearly half a million people and previously displayed in Japan, the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and at museums across the United States, The Art of Gaman features over 120 artifacts made by Japanese Americans while incarcerated in camps during World War II. Ranging from tools, woodcarvings, paintings, photographs, toys and furniture, it explores the Japanese concept of gaman, meaning “to endure the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity.”
The exhibit is curated by Delphine Hirasuna, author of The Art of Gaman. Most of the objects on view are on loan from former internees or their families, but The Art of Gaman also includes works by artists such as Ruth Asawa, Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani, Chiura Obata, and Henry Sugimoto.
An opening reception for Thousand, Century, or Millennium Club members of JACL will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015 at the Asia Society of Houston. The reception will feature a screening by ABC 7 News reporter David Ono of his film The Legacy of Heart Mountain. JACL members who upgrade to Thousand, Century, or Millennium Club membership will be invited to attend the opening reception and will also receive a complimentary signed copy of The Art of Gaman by Delphine Hirasuna.
